When a cooling-off period applies

Most qualifying consumer contracts agreed at your home or through an organised distance-selling arrangement have a 14-day cancellation period, subject to statutory exceptions. For services-only contracts it ends 14 days after the day the contract is made. For goods contracts, including contracts supplying and fitting goods, it generally ends 14 days after the day you or your nominated person receives the goods; special rules apply to separate deliveries. Your written contract will identify the applicable period and arrangements. An enquiry alone is not a contract.

How to cancel

Tell us clearly that you wish to cancel by email, post or telephone using the contact details below. You may use the model form but do not have to. Send your cancellation before the applicable deadline and keep a copy. Failure to give required cancellation information can extend the cancellation period by up to 12 months.

Starting during the cooling-off period

We must obtain your express request before starting services during the cancellation period, on a durable medium for off-premises contracts. If you then cancel, a proportionate charge for services actually supplied may apply only where the legal requirements were met. For services-only contracts, the right is lost after full performance only with the required prior consent and acknowledgement. Agreeing to an early start is not a blanket waiver of cancellation rights.

Refunds and goods

Where cancellation rights apply, refunds are made without undue delay and normally within 14 days of notification, using the original payment method unless you agree otherwise, without a refund fee. For goods, the law may permit withholding the refund until goods or evidence of return are received. Standard delivery charges are refunded where required. Return goods within 14 days of notifying cancellation unless we offer collection. You pay direct return costs only if properly informed before agreement; for goods not normally returnable by post, the cost or required estimate must be given beforehand. Where goods were delivered to your home when an off-premises contract was made and cannot normally be returned by post, we collect them at our expense. Deductions for handling beyond what is necessary to establish the goods' nature, characteristics and functioning apply only where lawful.

Exceptions, such as genuinely bespoke goods or specifically requested urgent repairs, are narrow and must be explained where relevant. Standard materials chosen from a range are not automatically bespoke. Statutory rights for faulty goods or defective work remain.
